Omrania’s nature-inspired design for the KAFD Grand Mosque honored for its contemporary and contextual urban aspect.

The Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture addresses new ideas for mosque design around the world. Among the innovative projects recognized in the award’s third cycle (2017–2020) is Omrania’s KAFD Grand Mosque, the spiritual heart of the KAFD master-planned district.

Completed in 2019, Omrania’s KAFD Grand Mosque was one of seven winners selected from across the Islamic world. These final seven were culled from a short list of 27 mosques, which in turn were selected from among 201 mosques nominated based on architectural, engineering and social criteria.

The award ceremony was held in Al Madinah Al Munawara on the evening of 15 December 2021 under the patronage of HRH Prince Sultan Bin Salman, HRH Prince Faisal Bin Salman, and Shaikh Abdullatif Al Fozan.

Omrania was represented at the ceremony by Mr. Abdulsalam Haddad, Partner and Director of Marketing and Business Development, and Mr. Mahmoud Abu Ghazal, Design Director.

Founded in 2011 by Shaikh Abdullatif Al Fozan, the award aims to contribute to the global development of contemporary mosque architecture in the 21st century. The award also launched Mosqpedia, the first international encyclopedia of mosque architecture.

An announcement by the Al Fozan Award on Twitter described the KAFD Grand Mosque as follows:

“A design inspired by the desert rose, enriching the place as an innovative architectural landmark, in which long-discussed environmental, cultural and religious symbols are in harmony with modern urbanism.”

The award-winning design for KAFD Grand Mosque connects with the surrounding urban fabric. Conceived as a 21st-century landmark, the mosque is designed with respect to the climate and offers a unified architectural experience from exterior to interior.
