In a feature story titled “Desert Bloom,” the magazine Design Middle East presented the KAFD Grand Mosque, an award-winning building designed by Omrania and constructed in the King Abdullah Financial District of Riyadh.

The story, published in the June 2021 issue of Design Middle East, highlighted the use of parametric design technology within an overall contextually sensitive project. “KAFD Grand Mosque provides a spiritual centre of world-class development in Riyadh,” the six-page feature stated. Highlighting the role of Omrania as architectural design and engineering consultant, the magazine wrote that the mosque’s design reflects “its future-oriented context, the desert environment of Saudi Arabia, and the traditions of Islam.”

The article explained that rather than looking to traditional forms, the KAFD Grand Mosque designed by Omrania looks to the tradition of innovation instead, pushing the limits of contemporary building technology.” The mosque’s distinctive geometric form is inspired by the naturally occurring sand crystal known as the desert rose, which is found in the deserts of Saudi Arabia.

The story also highlighted the mosque’s energy efficiency, water efficiency, and sustainable materials.
